Holy heckling heebie jeebies, Batman! This is a powerful reading today. We start at the situation, which is Death, or the end. So already we’re beginning at the end of things. What is ending in your life? What do you need to release? Is anything coming up for you over and over again, and you’re asking yourself, “Hey Self, why am I doing this?” Now may be the time to actually start paying attention to that voice. Something needs to go, and it’s maybe even trying to go. Are you hanging onto it and preventing it from dying the death it so richly deserves? Have the courage to look around in your life and really see what’s going on. And don’t be afraid to face it. In this culture, we’re deathly afraid of Death. We have no relationship with it except as some horrific thing that happens to other people in desperate, tragic, and occasionally disgusting ways. We don’t see it as a natural and normal part of this life we’re in, and that’s a mistake. We all die in psychological, emotional, spiritual, and ultimately physical ways, and we do not serve ourselves or others by refusing to face this obvious and important reality. So, take this opportunity to face it: what is dying for you right now? What has already died, and are you just hanging onto the corpse? Look. Open your eyes and really LOOK at it. What do you see?
In this reading I’ve pulled two additional cards to help out here: what you can change, and what you can’t. What you can change (The High Priestess) as you go through this transition is essentially yourself. You can initiate yourself into the mysteries, and develop tools and skills that you didn’t have before. You can go silent and learn to meditate (I’m talking to myself here 😉 ), and you can go in search of new teachers and new sources of wisdom and learning. What you can’t change (The Hierophant) is how you get past the bouncer at the door you have to go through to get to The High Priestess in the first place. You can’t just bum-rush The High Priestess, fling a handful of cash at Her, and expect Her to give you all Her wisdom. Ain’t gonna happen. You need to approach The Hierophant first. This means going through community, structure, organization, and ( … take a deep breath here … ) going by the rules. We Americans don’t much like going by the rules, especially if we aren’t the ones who have set those rules down. This however is one of those situations in which, “too bad, so sad” applies: if you want to take this opportunity to change what you can as you transition through this Death period, you HAVE to play by the rules of the house you’re in. Listen to your elders. Do what they say. Keep your mouth shut and do the exercises/homework/learnings, and remember why you’re going through it in the first place: the learning process is to find yourself reborn at the end of it. And in order to be reborn, you have to die, surrender to the rules and tradition of The Hierophant, and then walk the liminal spaces with The High Priestess to discover the self you wish to give birth to.
